Mutual Orthopedics' prosthetists and orthotists are certified by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics. We also employ highly trained technicians who custom fabricate each prosthetic and orthotic device on-site.
Our practitioners also work with rehabilitation professionals at Jacobi Medical Center, Mt. Sinai Hospital, New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center, Elmhurst Hospital, and Cohens Children's Medical Center.
Antonio Tufano, CO
Mutual Orthopedics co-founder Antonio Tufano began his career in orthotics in the 1960s as an orthotics apprentice at Hempstead Orthopedics. Originally from Naples, Italy, Antonio began as a technician for that company and worked his way up in the business, becoming a certified orthotist in the 1970s.
Antonio worked as a manager for two other area orthotics and prosthetics firms, and in 1978 he and a partner founded Mutual Orthopedics.
While Antonio formally retired in 2001, he still spends time in the business serving in an advisory capacity and sometimes assisting with fittings and fabricating orthoses for Mutual Orthopedics patients.
Anthony Tufano, CP
Anthony Tufano, president of Mutual Orthopedics, is an ABC-certified prosthetist since 1998. The son of the company’s co-founder, he is a graduate of the State University of New York at Stonybrook with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology.
His formal prosthetics training was through the Newington Certificate Program at the University of Connecticut.
Anthony and his family reside in East Williston.
Rick Lehneis, CPO
H. Richard Lehneis Jr., from Chattanooga, TN and a native of Suffolk N.Y., joined Mutual Orthopedics in 2013 and works in the company’s Islandia office. He specializes in orthotics neuromuscular disorders, pediatric and scoliosis orthoses, as well as high technology prosthetics and is proficient with CAD CAM technology.
After completing the orthotics and prosthetics technician program and orthotics assistant curriculum at Delgado College in New Orleans to earn an Associate of Science Degree in Orthotics Technology, Richard studied Spinal, Upper and Lower Extremity Orthotics at NYU and upper and lower extremity prosthetics at Northwestern University. Richard also attended UCLA’s certificate program in Advanced Trans-Femoral Prosthetics.
Residency work was completed at the Orthotics Center in Great Neck, NY; Lamberts Limb and Brace in New Orleans; Nassau Surgical in Hempstead, NY; Fillauer Orthopedics in Chattanooga, TN; Sunrise Surgical and Orthopedic Co., Inc. in Smithtown NY; and Orthotic Consultants, Inc., New York.
Richard became certified by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics in 1980 and he is a member of the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists. His father is one of the founding fathers of the academy and was an instructor, director, and professor of Prosthetics & Orthotics at NYU and pioneered plastic orthoses. Both of Richard’s brothers are in the O&P profession as well. Richard owned an O&P business since 1986.
Away from work, Richard enjoys spending time with family and friends, fishing rod building, and working on home improvement projects. He also enjoys most water and athletic activities, including snow skiing and fishing.
